Owned by husband and wife Alejandro and Rebecca Martinez, Back to Cuba Cafe was in operation for 18 years before closing in November of 2020. Two months before, the duo’s other restaurant Mamma Mia’s also closed.

In a message posted to Back to Cuba Cafe’s Facebook page, Alejandro Martinez shared, “Our cafe was created with my mother’s recipes to bring the Cuban flavor to our community in Nashville.”

Now Back to Cuba Cafe is returning once more, Tennesseans will once again be able to taste the Martinezes culinary creations.

What Now Nashville connected with Alejandro Martinez over the phone to confirm the latest details about the reopening.

“We are planning to bring back our regular menu,” said Martinez. “We were around for 18 years and after having to shut down, we are really excited to reopen in this new location.”

The menu of Back to Cuba Café will offer typical Cuban foods like white rice and black beans with cassava as well as other foods like steak and fish. Of course, Back to Cuba Cafe is reviving their authentic Cuban sandwiches which have drawn customers from far and wide over the years.

“I’ve lived in the Nashville area for 26 years, and it’s been great to have so much local support for what we are doing.,” said Martinez. “When I first moved here, I always wanted to own a Cuban restaurant and for many years we made that happen. We can’t wait to open and get started again.”

This new location should be able to accommodate 70 people in the space, which makes this a much larger space than the previous location.

Martinez shared that Back to Cuba Cafe is renovating the space on Old Hickory Blvd. Currently, they are halfway through the project.

Back to Cuba Cafe plans to have a light opening in the middle of June and host a grand opening in early July.
