The local favorite for fried chicken is getting a makeover at its original location at 112 19th Ave. S. Recently filed building permits indicate the renovations at Hattie B’s Midtown will include adding 820 square feet to the restaurant, with 678 square feet of porch dining space, and 142 square feet of service space.

Hattie B’s will expand into the existing tenant space, taking over the entirety of the Midtown building it’s called home since 2012. The former tenant, Gigi’s Cupcakes, closed in 2020. Though a construction timeline is not currently known, the restaurant is expected to stay open during renovations.

The Nashville-based chain is also planning an expansion to Franklin later this year with a new location inside The Factory at Franklin, as previously reported by What Now Nashville. Hattie B’s is a family-owned company, helmed by father-and-son duo Nick Bishop Sr. and Nick Bishop Jr. The family’s first introduction into the restaurant industry was through Bishop’s Meat and Three in 2007, where Bishop Sr. started serving the famous fried chicken before Hattie B’s was born. It’s thought that Bishop’s helped to perfect the family’s hot chicken recipe before the widespread growth of Hattie B’s. The brand now reaches nationwide, having locations in Texas, Georgia, Nevada, Alabama, and Tennessee.

Hattie B’s famous fried chicken ranges from six different heat levels, from mild to “shut the cluck up,” according to its online menu. Customers can expect that the upgraded location will allow for around 46 additional guests to be accommodated, as stated by the Nashville Business Journal. A representative from Hattie B’s did not immediately respond for comment.
