Co-founder and owner Nathan Weinberg spoke to What Now Nashville about the expansion, and Retrograde’s goal to give back to the community they serve.

“Location is something we are very excited about. We also feel strongly about creating jobs near post-secondary education, so we see this as an opportunity to achieve that internal goal,” Weinberg said in an email.

The new location at 2710 Clifton Ave. will neighbor Tennessee State University, Fisk University, and Meharrry Medical college, which are all historically Black-serving institutions.

“This move will allow us to grow our brand, expand our offerings and bring a much-needed coffeehouse option to the local students at TSU, Fisk and Meharry, in addition to a walkable option for our neighbors in City Heights,” Retrograde stated in a Facebook post.

Retrograde Coffee was founded in 2018 when Weinberg partnered with Steve Mabee and Davey Row-Mabee to open their first location on Dickerson Pike. Since then, the brand has grown in popularity and is known for offering house-roasted and regionally-roasted coffees, as well as serving pastries and house-made sourdough bagels and sandwiches.
